Chapter 25 - The Legislative Draft

During the spring of Grace’s senior year, the trustee called me with an unexpected request.
"Grace’s anonymous legal fund has drawn the attention of a state senator," the trustee explained. "The senator is drafting a bill that would mandate financial trusts for children featured in monetized social media content. It’s similar to the Coogan Law for child actors, but updated for the digital age."
"That is wonderful news," I said.
"The senator’s office wants to consult with the founder of the legal fund to help draft the language of the bill. They want to know the specific loopholes that exploiters use."
When I relayed the message to Grace, she sat in silence for a long time.
"They want to talk to me?" she asked.
"They want to talk to the founder of the fund," I clarified. "The trustee made it clear that you can maintain your anonymity. You would be consulting under a non-disclosure agreement. No press, no cameras, no public testimony."
Grace looked at her hands.
"Sabrina used to funnel the ad revenue through a shell company registered in Evelyn’s name, claiming it was a 'family management fee,'" Grace said softly. "And the banks didn't question it because the platforms didn't classify me as an employee."
"They didn't," I agreed. "The law was entirely blind to you."
"I want to help write the bill," Grace decided. Her voice was firm. "I want to close every single loophole they used against me. But I will only do it over secure conference calls. I will not be a mascot for their political campaign."

For the next three months, Grace spent her Friday afternoons on encrypted calls with legislative aides and legal experts. She meticulously dismantled the financial structures of family vlog channels. She explained how guardians hid earnings, how platforms ignored child labor, and how the absence of regulation allowed abuse to masquerade as entertainment.
She gave the lawmakers the blueprint to dismantle the very cage she had been locked inside.
