Chapter 9 - THE SURPRISE ALLY|

He stepped forward, unbuttoning his sleeve to expose the syringe needle.

"Don't worry," he whispered. "You won't feel a thing."

CRASH!

The glass window behind my bed shattered inward in a shower of deadly shards. A black-clad figure swung through the window on a tactical rappelling line, kicking the suited assassin straight in the chest with incredible force.

The man flew across the room, slamming hard into the heavy heart-rate monitor console. His gun clattered across the floor, spinning underneath my bed.

The dark figure landed nimbly on the floor, unhooking the rappelling harness in one swift motion. The intruder pulled off their helmet, revealing a sharp jawline and short-cropped dark hair.

It was Detective Marcus.

He was covered in soot, his face bruised and bleeding from the explosion, but he was very much alive.

"Did you really think I'd sit in that car without checking under the chassis first, Hannah?" Marcus grunted, pulling a sidearm from his tactical vest.

"Marcus!" I gasped, tears of relief surging to my eyes.

The assassin on the floor scrambled to his feet, reaching for a hidden blade in his boot. Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger twice.

BANG! BANG!

The suited man collapsed onto the floor, clutching his chest as dark blood pooled onto the linoleum tiles.

Marcus rushed to my side, quickly cutting away the restraints holding my cast to the bed. "We have about two minutes before the rest of his team realizes he failed. Can you move?"

"My legs are broken, Marcus," I said, pointing to the plaster. "I can't walk."

Marcus didn't waste another second. He scooped me up into his arms, cast and all, and carried me toward the shattered window.

"Hold on tight," Marcus said, snapping a heavy carabiner onto my harness. "We're going down."
