Chapter 5 - LETHAL DOSAGE|

Marcus moved instantly, grabbing Nurse Sarah’s wrist before the needle could reach my injection port.
"Hey! What are you doing?!" Sarah shrieked, dropping the syringe onto the floor. The glass shattered against the tiles, splashing a clear liquid across the floor.
"Call hospital security!" Marcus barked to one of his men standing guard outside.
Marcus knelt down, pulling a chemical test strip from his field kit and dipping it into the puddle of liquid on the tile. Within five seconds, the paper turned a deep, alarming shade of violet.
"Potassium chloride," Marcus muttered, looking up at the nurse with sheer disgust. "A lethal dose. It would have caused cardiac arrest within two minutes. It would have looked like a heart attack brought on by trauma."
Sarah broke down, sobbing hysterically against the wall as the hospital guards handcuffed her.
"I had to!" she wept, her voice echoing down the corridor. "They threatened my daughter! They said if I didn't finish what Adrian started, they'd kill her!"
"Who told you to do it?!" I yelled, forcing my cracked ribs to expand as I sat up as far as my cast would allow. "Who threatened you, Sarah?!"
"I don't know his name!" she wailed, being pulled out into the hallway. "He called from an encrypted number! He knew everything about my family! He said the five million insurance policy had to be paid out by midnight!"

I slumped back onto the thin mattress, cold sweat soaking my hospital gown.
The nightmare wasn't over. Adrian was behind bars, but the mastermind was still out there, pulling the strings from the shadows, desperate to collect the bounty on my life before sunrise.
