Chapter 10 - THE ESCAPE|

The wind roared in my ears as we descended down the outer wall of the hospital building, surrounded by smoke, flashing red police lights, and screaming sirens.
We hit the wet asphalt of the alleyway behind the hospital just as heavy gunfire erupted from the ninth-floor window above us. The assassin's team had reached my room, but we were already gone.
Marcus dragged me into the back of an old, rusted delivery van parked in the dark alley. He slammed the doors, hit the gas, and the van roared out onto the main street, disappearing into the rainy Chicago night.
"Where are we going?" I asked, sitting among stacks of cardboard boxes in the dark cargo area.
"To a safe house," Marcus said from the driver's seat, watching his rearview mirror intensely. "Your house is overrun with Erebus mercenaries. We can't get the drive tonight."
"We don't need to go to my house," I revealed, wiping rain and glass dust off my forehead.
Marcus glanced back at me through the interior mirror. "What do you mean?"
"The safe behind the closet mirror was a decoy," I admitted softly. "I knew Adrian was watching my movements. I put a dummy drive in that safe three weeks ago."
Marcus stared at me in disbelief. "Then where is the real Erebus ledger?"

I reached down to my heavy leg cast. I ran my fingernail along the thick plaster near my knee, feeling for a microscopic seam I had secretly requested the orthopedic surgeon—an old college friend—to leave behind.
"It’s inside my cast," I whispered. "I’ve been wearing the proof against Erebus Holdings on my body the entire time."
