Chapter 13 - THE BETRAYAL OF THE BADGE|

"State Police?" I looked at Marcus in disbelief. "He’s using his personal security detail to execute us under the guise of an official raid!"
"Victor controls the State Police tactical unit," Marcus spat, pulling two extra magazines from his vest. "If we walk out there with our hands up, they’ll shoot us on sight and report it as a tragic firefight with dangerous fugitives."
BANG!
A tear gas canister smashed through the boathouse window, rolling across the floor and spewing thick, choking white smoke into the air.
I coughed violently, my eyes burning as tears streamed down my face. Marcus grabbed my arm, dragging me toward the rear slip where a small, motorboat was tied to the wooden dock.
"Get in!" Marcus yelled over the hiss of the gas.
"What about you?!" I gasped, watching him draw his sidearm.
"I’ll draw their fire!" Marcus shouted, pushing the boat’s throttle forward. "You take the laptop and get to the Federal Courthouse downtown! Prosecutor Reed is the only person in this state Victor can't buy!"
"Marcus, no!" I screamed.

Before I could stop him, Marcus cast off the rope and untied the boat. The engine roared to life, propelling me out into the dark, choppy waters of Lake Michigan just as heavy gunfire shredded the wooden walls of the boathouse behind me.
I looked back through the smoke and saw Marcus firing continuously at the tactical officers pouring into the structure, sacrificing himself so I could escape into the mist.
