Chapter 6 - THE VANISHING EVIDENCE|

By 3:00 AM, my hospital room had been transformed into a command post. Two armed federal marshals stood guard outside my door, and Detective Marcus had swept the entire room for listening devices.

"We need to get you out of here, Hannah," Marcus said, pacing the floor. "This hospital is compromised. Whoever is behind this has endless resources and deep reach."

"Not until I access my master drive," I said weakly, my mind working through the pain of my injuries. "Before the fall... before Adrian pushed me, I backed up all my forensic audit files onto an encrypted drive hidden inside my office safe at home."

"Your house is a crime scene," Marcus warned. "The police searched it after your accident."

"They searched for evidence of a struggle," I replied, staring directly into his eyes. "They didn't search behind the drywall behind the master closet mirror. That drive contains the complete ledger of Erebus Holdings. Every name, every bank account, every bribe."

Marcus paused, evaluating the risks. "I'll take a team to your house right now."

"No," I urged. "You can't go alone. Uncle Richard has access to the house key. If he realizes Adrian failed, he’ll go there to destroy the evidence."

Marcus pulled out his radio, calling his team outside. "We move now. Stay here with the Marshals, Hannah."

As Marcus left, I looked up at the wall clock ticking away silently.

3:15 AM.

My phone—which Marcus had recovered from my purse—vibrated on the bedside table. It was an anonymous text message from a untraceable burner number.

I picked it up with my uninjured hand and opened the image attached to the text.

My breath caught in my throat.

It was a live photograph of Detective Marcus’s unmarked police cruiser, captured from an elevated angle... with a red laser tracking dot resting directly on the driver's side headrest.
