Chapter 7 - The Smear Campaign

By noon, Ethan and Beatrice had managed to take a subway to a cheap, run-down suburban motel on the outskirts of Queens, paid for with the twenty-dollar bill and a pawned silver ring Beatrice had been wearing.
Sitting on a stained mattress, Ethan’s panic turned into manic, unhinged rage.
“She thinks she can destroy me?” Ethan snarled, pacing the small room. “I’ll destroy her first!”
He logged into his social media accounts using the motel’s slow Wi-Fi. With frantic fingers, he began typing a massive public post, targeting local news outlets and high-society blogs.
“EXPOSING THE STERLING FAMILY: How billionaire heiress Victoria Sterling used her power to ruin an innocent man’s life. She suffered a mental breakdown, staged fake abuse, and pulled corporate strings to steal my home and career! #JusticeForEthan”
He attached edited photos of the kitchen from months ago, trying to make it look like I had destroyed the property during a rage.
Within two hours, the post gained thousands of shares. Gossip blogs picked up the story: Billionaire Heiress Accused of Framing Husband!
Ethan sat on the motel bed, laughing hysterically. “See, Mom? Public opinion will ruin her! The Sterling family hates bad press!”
At 4:00 p.m., my attorney Sarah Vance called a press conference at the Sterling Global headquarters in Manhattan.
Standing before dozens of news cameras, Sarah didn't make an emotional speech. She simply turned on a high-definition monitor behind her podium.
First, she played the full, unedited audio recording of Ethan striking me while Beatrice laughed.
Second, she displayed certified medical reports documenting the lacerations inside my mouth and the severe deep-tissue bruising on my face.
Third, she projected Ethan’s bank records, showing over $400,000 in unauthorized corporate wire transfers to Beatrice’s personal shell companies over the past eighteen months.
Sarah Vance looked directly into the news cameras with ice in her eyes.

“Mr. Vale’s public statements are not only fraudulent, but they also constitute aggravated defamation,” Sarah stated calmly. “We have officially filed a twenty-million-dollar libel lawsuit against him, alongside formal criminal complaints for domestic assault and corporate grand larceny.”
The internet exploded. Overnight, Ethan became the most hated man in America.
