The trial began three months later, drawing national attention.
It lasted five brutal days, during which every piece of Ethan’s dark character was laid bare before a twelve-person jury.
The prosecution presented the digital audio recording first. Hearing Ethan’s violent rage echo through the silent courtroom made several jurors physically wince.
Then came my testimony.
I walked up to the witness stand with steady steps. I swore under oath and looked the jury straight in the eyes.
“Why did you stay with him for three years, Mrs. Sterling?” the prosecutor asked gently.
“I wanted to give him every chance to prove he married me for love,” I answered clearly. “I wanted to believe his promises. But when he struck me that night over a bag of coffee, I realized that his kindness was a lie, and his cruelty was his true nature.”
When Richard Kane cross-examined me, he tried to rattle my composure.
“Isn't it true, Mrs. Sterling, that you kept your immense wealth a secret from your husband to control him?” Kane demanded aggressively.
“I kept my maiden name on my private assets to protect my family’s legacy,” I replied without flinching. “My husband did not need to know my bank balance to treat me with basic human dignity.”
The courtroom burst into quiet whispers of approval. Kane sat down, his face red, knowing he had lost the jury completely.
