Chapter 14 - Sentenced

|

The courtroom fell into an expectant hush as the jury foreperson stood up to read the verdict.

Ethan sat rigidly at the defense table, squeezing his eyes shut, his knuckles white.

“On count one, aggravated domestic assault in the second degree: Guilty.”

“On count two, grand larceny in the first degree: Guilty.”

“On count three, corporate wire fraud: Guilty.”

“On count four, felony extortion: Guilty.”

Beatrice broke into hysterical sobs at the defense table as the guilty verdicts kept coming.

Two weeks later, Justice Mercer delivered the final sentence.

“Ethan Vale,” Justice Mercer stated firmly from the bench. “You demonstrated a terrifying lack of remorse, abusing your position of trust both in your marriage and in your corporate career. I sentence you to fourteen years in state prison without the possibility of early parole.”

Ethan’s knees gave out, and he collapsed into his chair, weeping like a terrified child.

“As for Beatrice Vale,” the judge continued, looking down at the shivering older woman. “For your role in the financial fraud scheme and co-conspiracy, you are sentenced to four years in prison and full forfeiture of all personal assets.”

The gavel slammed down hard.

As the guards led Ethan and Beatrice away in handcuffs, Ethan looked back at me one last time through the glass partition.

His eyes were hollow, broken, and filled with complete ruin.

I stood up, smoothed my dress, and walked out of the courtroom beside my grandfather into the bright afternoon sun.
