Chapter 9 - The Trial of Margaret Vance

|
Six months later, the federal court in Alexandria was packed for the trial of Margaret and Jason Vance.
Because Ethan had pled guilty to reduced charges in exchange for his testimony against his family’s illegal financial network, he sat at the witness stand wearing an orange jumpsuit, testifying directly against his own mother.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in my full Service Alpha uniform, my arm fully healed, though a faint scar remained near my elbow.
Margaret sat at the defense table, her high-society posture completely shattered. Her high-end lawyer was struggling to counter the overwhelming trail of bank statements, forged signatures, and security footage provided by federal investigators.
“Mrs. Vance was fully aware that the funds entering her accounts were derived from unauthorized access to military logistics databases,” the federal prosecutor declared to the jury. “She actively used those funds to maintain her lavish lifestyle, fully complicit in the exploitation of her own daughter-in-law.”
When the verdict was read, Margaret was found guilty on all six counts of wire fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. Jason was convicted on two counts of accessory to fraud.
As the guards led Margaret away, she turned toward me, her face contorted in tears and rage.

“You destroyed my family!” she shrieked across the courtroom. “You ungrateful bitch! We took you in!”
I didn't answer. I simply stood up, adjusted my military jacket, and walked past her out into the bright Virginia sunlight.
