That evening, General Hayes and I sat on the patio of an officer’s club overlooking the Potomac River, watching the sunset cast golden reflections across the water.
“You gave a hell of a speech today, Clara,” Hayes said, raising his glass in a quiet toast.
“I had a good mentor, General,” I replied, clinking my glass against his.
“So,” Hayes said, leaning back in his chair. “Word on the hill is that the Pentagon is expanding the Defense Intelligence Task Force. They want a new Deputy Director to head the counter-espionage division.”
I raised an eyebrow. “That’s a Colonel’s billet.”
“And you’re on the fast-track promotion list,” Hayes countered with a smile. “The Board reviewed your dossier yesterday. They don't just see a brilliant tactical officer, Clara. They see someone who cannot be compromised, cannot be intimidated, and cannot be broken.”
I looked out over the river, feeling the cool evening breeze against my face.
Four years ago, I was a woman hiding her bruises beneath a long-sleeved uniform, praying her husband wouldn't lose his temper at the dinner table. Today, I was a commander of intelligence operations, trusted with the highest security secrets of the nation.

“I’ll take the posting,” I said, looking back at Hayes with absolute certainty.
“I knew you would,” Hayes grinned. “Your new office is on the top floor of the Pentagon. Better view than this one.”
