Chapter 14 - The Final Visit

|

Two days later, I stood inside the medical ward of the Federal Prison for Women in Alderson, West Virginia.

Margaret sat in a wheelchair, hooked up to an oxygen line. The sharp, polished society woman who had sneered at my uniform was gone. In her place was a fragile, hollow shell of a person, her skin pale and paper-thin.

When I stepped into the small visiting room, her sunken eyes flickered with a sudden, desperate hope.

“Clara…” Margaret rasped, her hands trembling as she reached toward me. “You came.”

I remained standing near the door, keeping my hands folded neatly behind my back. “I came to hear what you had to say, Margaret.”

“I’m sorry,” she wheezed, tears leaking from her clouded eyes. “I was wrong about you. I let Ethan treat you terribly because… because I was afraid of him, too. I protected him my whole life, and look where it brought us. Please… write a letter to the parole board. Tell them I’m no longer a threat. I just want to die at home.”

I looked at her, searching my heart for any lingering anger, any desire for revenge, or any trace of the fear she used to instill in me.

There was nothing left. Only cold truth.

“You weren't afraid of him, Margaret,” I said softly, every word echoing in the quiet room. “You enabled him because his control over me made you feel powerful. You sat there and watched him break my arm with a steel chair, and you looked down at your program.”

Margaret’s lips trembled, but no words came out.

“I won't write a letter to the parole board,” I continued calmly. “You are exactly where you belong. You built Ethan into a monster, and now you are both living in the world you created.”

I turned around, opened the door, and walked away, leaving her weeping quietly into her oxygen mask.
