Chapter 11 - Ghosts in the System

|

Life moved forward with a quiet, powerful momentum. I bought a small, sunlit townhouse in Arlington, painted the walls warm colors, and filled the rooms with light. For the first time in my adult life, my home was a sanctuary, completely free of sudden outbursts, walking on eggshells, or hidden cruelties.

My work at Defense Intelligence was demanding, but deeply satisfying. I was surrounded by men and women who evaluated me based on my competence, my intellect, and my leadership.

Then, on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, my secure desk phone rang.

It was my lead analyst, Captain Marcus Vance—no relation to Ethan, a coincidence we often laughed about.

“Major, you need to take a look at the incoming internal security flagged reports,” Marcus said, his voice tight. “We have a hit on a flagged name in the prison communications database.”

I pulled up the file on my dual monitors.

Because of Ethan’s connection to military logistics data, his outgoing communications from the federal correctional facility in Cumberland were automatically transcribed and scanned by AI algorithms for security breaches.

A flag had been raised twenty minutes ago.

Ethan had attempted to send a letter to an unverified private investigator in Richmond. The transcript was pulled up on my screen.

“Find out where she’s living,” Ethan had written in his cramped, desperate handwriting. “Find out who she’s seeing. She thinks she’s safe because she’s a Major now. But she destroyed my mother. She ruined my life. When I get out of here, she’s going to pay for every single year I spend in this hole.”
