Chapter 3 - The Family Shield

|
Two Military Police officers, their boots pounding rhythmically against the floor, rushed down the center aisle, their hands hovering near their sidearms.
Ethan’s reckless confidence suddenly cracked. He took a hasty step back, realizing for the first time where he was and who was surrounding him.
“What the hell is this?” Ethan snapped, waving his hands defensively. “Back off! This is between me and my wife!”
Margaret finally leaped up from her seat, her pearls swinging as she pushed her way toward the stage.
“Stop this right now!” Margaret demanded, her voice shrill. “My son is under tremendous pressure! He’s been working eighty hours a week! Whatever happened here was just an emotional misunderstanding and should be handled privately at home!”
“They’re married,” Jason added, stepping up beside his mother with his hands in his pockets. “It’s a family matter. The military has no business interfering in a couple's argument.”
General Hayes slowly stood up from the floor, placing himself directly between Ethan and my crippled body.
The MP officers reached the edge of the stage, their faces hard set.
“You don’t know her!” Ethan barked at the General, trying to project strength he no longer possessed. “She pushes people until they react! She’s manipulative! She does this on purpose so she can play the helpless victim!”
General Hayes raised one single hand, palm outward.
The two MPs stopped instantly in their tracks, standing at rigid attention.
For the first time since he had picked up that chair, Ethan looked genuinely terrified.
General Hayes lowered his gaze to the Purple Heart pinned beside my broken arm. Then he raised his head and stared directly into my husband’s eyes with a gaze that had unnerved foreign warlords.
“You keep calling this a family matter,” Hayes said, his voice terrifyingly calm, vibrating through the silent room.
Nobody moved. Nobody even seemed to breathe.
“What you apparently don’t understand,” Hayes continued, “is exactly who your wife is, what happened before she arrived here today… and why several high-ranking people in this room already know your name.”

Ethan went completely still. Margaret’s protest died in her throat.
And then General Hayes began to speak.
