Chapter 6 - The Transfer of Power

“Take them into custody,” General Hayes ordered.

The MPs didn't hesitate. Four more officers stepped out from the side doors. Within seconds, heavy steel handcuffs clicked around Ethan’s wrists, followed immediately by Jason and a weeping Margaret.

“Clara! Tell them to stop!” Ethan screamed as he was dragged backward down the aisle. “I’m your husband! You can’t let them do this to me! Clara!”

I watched them drag him away, his pathetic cries echoing until the heavy double doors slammed shut.

Medics rushed onto the stage with a stretcher. They gently stabilized my broken arm, placing it in a rigid splint before lifting me off the cold floor.

General Hayes walked alongside the gurney as they wheeled me toward the side exit.

“I’m sorry it had to happen like this, Captain,” Hayes said quietly, looking down at me with genuine regret. “We wanted to secure the evidence on his financial network before making the arrest. I never anticipated he would snap like that in public.”

“It’s fine, General,” I whispered, tears of relief finally flowing freely down my cheeks. “The arm will heal. But for the first time in four years… I can finally breathe.”

“Your assignment to Defense Intelligence starts as soon as you’re cleared from surgery,” Hayes said, a faint smile touching his lips. “And as for Mr. Vance… he’s going to learn very quickly what happens when you cross the United States Military.”

As the ambulance doors closed, blocking out the noise of the base, I closed my eyes. The pain was still burning in my bone, but the shadow that had ruled my life was officially gone.
