Chapter 19 - The New Generation

|

Six years after the day Ethan broke my arm, I stood in the courtyard of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

The sun was shining brightly off the Hudson River as hundreds of young cadets in pristine grey uniforms stood in flawless formation for their graduation ceremony.

I was there as an official representative of the Department of Defense, tasked with presenting the top graduate of the intelligence track with their commission.

As I walked down the line of young men and women, I saw the fierce, unyielding determination in their eyes. They were ready to serve, ready to protect, ready to face whatever hardships lay ahead.

I stopped in front of a young female cadet standing at rigid attention. Her uniform was immaculate, her eyes staring straight ahead, her chest adorned with a single ribbon for academic excellence.

“Cadet Miller,” I said softly, stepping forward with her gold second lieutenant bars.

“Ma’am!” she responded, her voice echoing with pride.

As I pinned the brass bars onto her collar, I leaned in slightly.

“Never let anyone convince you that your kindness is weakness, Lieutenant,” I whispered to her. “And never let anyone make you feel small in your own uniform.”

The young woman’s eyes flickered with a sudden, deep emotion. “Understood, Director. Thank you.”

I stepped back, rendered a crisp, sharp salute, which she returned with absolute precision. Passing the torch to a new generation of leaders who would never have to bow to fear was the ultimate victory over my past.
