Chapter 20 - The Unwritten Horizon

|
Late that night, I sat on the quiet balcony of my Arlington townhouse, watching the distant lights of Washington D.C. sparkle against the velvet sky.
The city was calm, vast, and endless.
I picked up my journal from the small glass table and flipped through the yellowed pages of my past. I read through the old entries—the quiet tears written in hotel rooms, the hidden bruises, the desperate prayers for a way out—and then turned to the blank pages at the end.
I picked up my pen, resting it against the crisp white paper.
The story of the girl who stayed quiet on the floor was over. The story of the woman who stood up, took command, and reshaped her destiny was fully written.
Suddenly, my secure comms device on the table vibrated softly.
A high-level alert message flashed across the encrypted screen: “DIRECTOR VANCE—UNUSUALLY SENSITIVE LOGISTICS ANOMALY DETECTED IN OVERSEAS ASSETS. IMMEDIATE ADVISEMENT REQUESTED.”
I set my pen down, looking at the glowing screen, then out at the wide, open horizon of the capital city.
The world was vast, full of unexpected turns, hidden dangers, and uncharted paths. But no matter what came next—no matter what storms gathered on the horizon—I knew one thing with absolute, unshakeable certainty.

I would never bow my head again.
I stood up, picked up the secure device, and stepped back inside to answer the call.
