Chapter 16 - The Fallen Empire

Julian dropped into his leather chair as the handcuffs clicked around his wrists. "Mom! Mom, do something! Call the lawyers!"
Evelyn burst into hysterical, uncontrollable tears, grabbing at the detective's coat. "He didn't mean it! It was an accident! She slipped! My son is a good man!"
"Evelyn Vance," the second detective stepped forward, pulling out a second pair of cuffs. "You are under arrest as an accessory to attempted murder, obstruction of justice, and filing a false police report."
The room descended into utter chaos as both Julian and his mother were marched out of the courthouse in chains, surrounded by a wall of flashing camera bulbs from news crews who had been tipped off by Daniel Mercer.
Three weeks later, the legal fallout reached its absolute, devastating conclusion.
Faced with the undeniable video evidence, the forensic financial audit from Daniel Mercer, and the testimony of his own sister, Julian agreed to a full, unappealable plea bargain to avoid a life sentence.
He was sentenced to twenty-two years in state prison without the possibility of parole for fifteen years.
Evelyn Vance was convicted as an accessory and sentenced to six years in a medium-security correctional facility.
Their assets were seized by the state to satisfy the $2.5 million civil fraud judgment awarded to my daughter and me. Vance Construction was forced into involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy, its equipment auctioned off on the courthouse steps to pay off the debts Julian had accumulated.
