Chapter 12 - The Laptop Secrets

|
Late that evening, Maya returned to the hospital carrying a heavy black backpack. She slipped quietly into my room, locked the door behind her, and pulled out a sleek silver laptop.
"This is Julian's secondary work computer," Maya breathed, setting it on my bed. "He keeps it in his safe at Mom's house. I knew the combination because he uses our old childhood street address as his passcode."
Sarah Vance, who had stayed late to coordinate with the digital forensics team, immediately pulled a thumb drive from her purse and plugged it into the USB port.
"Let's see what else your husband has been hiding," Sarah murmured, opening the system file directory.
The laptop was a treasure trove of corporate fraud.
Inside a encrypted folder named PROJECT HAWTHORNE, we discovered dozens of financial spreadsheets detailing Julian's construction firm's true financial standing. He wasn't just struggling—he was nearly three million dollars in debt to private hard-money lenders, tax authorities, and sub-contractors.
Then Sarah clicked on an archived messaging thread from a contact labeled D. Mercer.
The last message sent from D. Mercer three months prior read:
Julian, I told you I'm not comfortable with this arrangement. Trying to force a trust transfer through medical leverage is illegal. If Elena refuses to sign, we need another plan. If you pull something stupid at that house, I will go straight to the District Attorney.
"Who is D. Mercer?" Sarah asked, looking up at me.
I searched my memory, searching through years of family dinners and construction clients. "I... I don't know. I've never heard Julian mention anyone named Mercer."
"Wait," Maya chimed in, pointing at the screen. "Look at the email address attached to the contact."

My heart dropped. Mercer Contracting was the largest commercial excavation firm in the state—and its founder, Daniel Mercer, had been my father’s primary business rival thirty years ago.
