Chapter 11 - The Refusal

Before we could investigate the workshop ledger, Sarah pulled a second document from her briefcase—a printout of a private email exchange retrieved through a subpoena of Julian’s business server.
"Your father didn't just leave you a letter, Elena," Sarah said, setting the printout on my tray. "He explicitly warned Julian six months before he passed away."
The email was dated October 14th. Julian had sent a lengthy, demanding message to my father while Dad was undergoing his second round of chemotherapy.

SUBJECT: Hawthorne Property Transfer — URGENT
Thomas,
As you know, Vance Construction is expanding into commercial development. Elena is being completely unreasonable about the Hawthorne title. She refuses to sign the asset release forms. As her father, you need to make her see sense. If we don't liquidate that land by the end of the quarter, my company will face severe liquidity issues. Talk to your daughter and tell her to fulfill her duties to her new family.
Beneath it was my father’s reply, sent three hours later. It contained exactly one sentence:

Julian,
Elena’s decisions regarding her property belong entirely to Elena; my daughter owes you nothing, and if you ever harass her about my estate again, I will personally ensure your creditors learn the true state of your balance sheet.
I stared at my father's sharp, uncompromising words.
Julian had known for over a year that my father would never back down. He had waited until my father was dead, waited until I was isolated, heavily pregnant, and vulnerable, to launch his violent assault.

"He thought I was weak," I whispered, my hand clenching into a fist. "He thought because Dad was gone, there was no one left to fight him."
"Julian made the fatal mistake every bully makes," Sarah stated coldly. "He assumed that kindness is the same thing as weakness."
