Chapter 14 - The Contractor's Shadow

"My father asked you to watch over me?" I asked, completely stunned. "You were his competitor for thirty years!"
"We were competitors in business, Elena, but we were brothers in honor," Daniel Mercer corrected gently over the line. "Twenty years ago, when my firm was going bankrupt during the housing crash, your father, Thomas, quietly co-signed a one-million-dollar credit line that saved my family from living on the street. He never asked for publicity. He never asked for interest. He only asked that I stand by his family if the storm ever blew his way."
Tears sprang to my eyes as I listened to the story of my father's quiet, boundless generosity.
"Julian came to my office six months ago," Daniel continued, his voice darkening. "He wanted my firm to supply heavy machinery to tear down the historic timber framing at Hawthorne House. He offered me a twenty-percent equity stake in his illegal subdivision scheme."
"What did you tell him?" Sarah demanded into the phone.
"I told him to get the hell out of my office before I broke his neck," Daniel snapped. "And I sent a private investigator to track his movements. Elena, Julian owes $1.5 million to an offshore syndicate that uses predatory land loans. If he doesn't deliver the title to Hawthorne House by the end of this month, those people are going to dismantle his business piece by piece."
"He shoved me into boiling soup because his clock was running out," I stated, my voice deadpan and steady.
"Yes," Daniel confirmed softly. "He was desperate. But I have the entire paper trail of his illegal dealings with the syndicate, Elena. I have his signed promissory notes using forged signatures of your father's name."

"Will you testify?" Sarah asked sharply.
"I'll do better than testify," Daniel Mercer declared grimly. "I'm standing outside the District Attorney's office right now with three federal investigators. It's time to put Julian Vance behind bars."
