Chapter 1 - The Boiling Point

|

The scream that tore out of me after I hit the kitchen floor didn’t even sound human. It was a raw, primal sound born of sheer agony and terrifying realization.

Just seconds earlier, the kitchen had been filled with the rich, savory aroma of chicken stock. I’d been standing beside the stove, my eight-month-pregnant belly brushing against the counter edge. Julian stood inches from me, his face twisted in a sneer that had become far too familiar over the past few months. He was holding a stack of legal documents, demanding once again that I sign over Hawthorne House—the historic, sprawling home my father had left me in his will.

“It’s my inheritance, Julian!” I had gasped, holding my ground. “My father built this place with his own hands. I am not signing it over to your failing construction business!”

Then Julian put both hands on my shoulders.

I remember the violent, ruthless shove. I remember the stainless-steel edge of the twelve-quart stockpot tipping over. And then, an ocean of boiling liquid exploded across my face, neck, shoulder, and left arm.

Pain swallowed the entire world. It wasn't just heat; it was an aggressive, tearing fire that ate through my clothes and melted skin in a fraction of a second. But even as the blinding agony paralyzed my senses, maternal instinct took complete control. I curled my body tightly into a fetal position on the slick linoleum floor, using my back and elbows to shield my swollen stomach from the scalding wave.

“My baby!” I sobbed into the floor, tears scalding my raw cheeks. “Please... somebody save my baby!”

Julian stood directly over me, breathing hard, his hands trembling slightly. He stared down at my writhing body as though I were an annoying obstacle he had finally cleared from his path.

His mother, Evelyn, remained seated at the white oak kitchen table. She didn't jump up. She didn't drop her teacup. Her face was so eerie, calm, and detached that her expression frightened me almost as much as the third-degree burns eating into my flesh.

Evelyn set her cup down with a delicate click.

“Maybe now she’ll stop being selfish,” she said coldly.
