Chapter 15 - Confrontation and Clarity

|

Two days later, the family court judge held an emergency, closed-door mediation session at the Manhattan Supreme Courthouse to address the contested divorce petition and child custody filings.

Julian arrived sitting beside his mother, Evelyn, and his high-priced corporate defense attorney. He wore a crisp black suit, looking supremely confident, believing he was about to force a settlement against a bedridden, scarred woman.

I walked into the conference room under my own power, wearing a sharp navy suit, my head held high, the silver-pink burn scars along my neck fully visible for the entire room to see. Sarah Vance walked on my left; Daniel Mercer walked on my right.

Julian’s eyes widened in shock as he saw Daniel Mercer sit down at my legal table.

"What is he doing here?!" Julian sputtered, turning pale. "This is a private marital dispute!"

"Sit down, Mr. Vance," the judge ordered sternly, tapping her gavel. "Mrs. Vance, you may present your opening statement."

Sarah didn't open a legal brief. She simply reached over, pulled out a heavy black laptop, and turned the screen toward the judge, Julian, and Evelyn.

She pressed play.

The high-definition video from the hidden garage camera filled the room.

The audio boomed through the conference room speakers: Julian's voice clearly planning to "make it look like an accident," followed by the horrifying visual of Julian shoving me into the boiling pot, my agony-riddled screams, and Evelyn casually wiping the counter while saying, "Maybe now she’ll stop being selfish."

Evelyn gasped, clutching her chest, her face turning gray as paper.

Julian leaped out of his chair, his hands shaking uncontrollably. "That's... that's illegal surveillance! That footage is inadmissible!"

"The footage was recorded on a private security system owned by the Hawthorne Family Trust," Sarah countered smoothly. "And the District Attorney's office has already verified its authenticity. In fact, Mr. Vance..."

The conference room doors swung wide open.

Four armed detectives from the NYPD Domestic Violence and Major Crimes Unit stepped inside, accompanied by two federal agents.

"Julian Vance," the lead detective announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, aggravated domestic assault, felony child endangerment, and commercial fraud."
