Chapter 7 - Into the Dark

Before Brandon could react to my words, a massive, deafening BOOM shook the foundation of the mansion.

The sound came from the basement, where the primary electrical grid was housed. Instantly, the blinding crystal chandeliers shut off. The recessed lighting died.

The entire mansion plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

A wave of panic moved through the crowd. Thirty guests started screaming, dropping their champagne glasses. The sound of shattering crystal echoed in the dark.

"Stay calm!" Brandon yelled, his voice cracking with sudden panic. "Chloe, grab your phone flashlight! Someone check the breaker!"

"Brandon, I can't see anything!" Chloe shrieked from somewhere nearby.

"Nobody move!" one of the board members shouted.

They were wealthy, pampered executives and socialites. They had never experienced a moment of true danger in their lives. The darkness terrified them.

Then, suddenly, the darkness was broken by a blinding blue glow.

Every single smart screen in the mansion—the massive eighty-inch television in the living room, the digital art frames on the walls, the security monitors in the hallway—turned on simultaneously.

They were displaying the exact live feeds from the guests' cell phones.
