Chapter 19 - Ashes and Embers

|

Before I could even speak, the heavy steel door of the panic room vibrated violently.

BOOM.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

BOOM.

"They're planting C4 on the door," my father said, standing up and pulling a heavy revolver from his coat. "We have sixty seconds before they blow it open."

"We're trapped," I panicked, looking around the small concrete box.

"No, we aren't," my father said.

He walked to the back wall of the panic room, grabbed a heavy iron handle disguised as a ventilation grate, and pulled. A dark, narrow tunnel opened up, leading deep underground.

"The builder was one of my men," my father smiled grimly. "I had this escape tunnel dug beneath your estate the day you bought the land. It leads to the woods behind the property."

We crawled into the dark tunnel just as a massive explosion ripped the steel door of the panic room completely off its hinges.

Smoke and fire poured into the room, followed by Brandon's furious screams.

We ran through the dirt tunnel for what felt like hours. Above us, I could hear the muffled sounds of sirens and my mansion burning to the ground. Brandon had failed to capture me, and he was likely destroying the evidence.

Finally, we reached the end of the tunnel, pushing open a heavy grate and stepping out into the freezing night air of the forest.
