"Drop the weapons, Marcus!" Brandon shouted over the rising tension, pulling his own firearm from his tuxedo jacket. "You are outnumbered and outgunned. Tell your men to stand down, or Evelyn dies right here."

My father didn't flinch. He looked at the bodies of his two dead men on the floor, then at Chloe, and finally at me.

"I taught you never to show fear, Evelyn," my father said quietly, maintaining eye contact with me. "Do you remember the second rule I taught you?"

I swallowed hard, my heart hammering in my ears.

"Always know your exits," I whispered.

"Correct," my father smiled.

He didn't yell an order. He simply tapped his silver cane twice on the marble floor.

Suddenly, the massive glass skylight above the living room shattered violently.

Flashbang grenades dropped from the roof, exploding with blinding white light and deafening screeches. The Romanov assassins screamed, clutching their eyes as the room was completely blinded.

My father grabbed my arm with terrifying strength and pulled me backward toward the hidden servant's corridor behind the grand staircase.

Gunfire erupted blindly in the dark. Bullets shredded the expensive artwork and shattered the chandeliers above.

"Kill them!" Brandon roared blindly in the smoke. "Don't let her escape!"
