Chapter 20 - The Call in the Dark

|

We stumbled through the thick trees, covered in dirt and soot.

A black armored SUV was waiting on the dirt road at the edge of the woods. One of my father's surviving loyal men stood by the open door, heavily armed.

We climbed into the back seat, completely exhausted. As the SUV sped away into the dark, I looked back through the rear window, watching the orange glow of my burning mansion lighting up the night sky.

I had lost my husband, my company, and my entire identity in a single night.

But I had survived.

My father wrapped his coat around my shivering shoulders. "We have to leave the country, Evelyn. Victor will not stop hunting you."

Before I could answer, a sharp ringing sound pierced the quiet of the car.

I looked down. Inside the pocket of my father’s coat, a satellite phone was ringing.

My father frowned, pulling it out. The caller ID was restricted. He hesitated, then answered it, putting it on speaker.

"Marcus," a chilling, cultured, and terrifyingly calm voice echoed through the car. It wasn't Brandon.

"Victor," my father growled.

"You got her out," Victor Romanov said softly over the line. "Impressive as always, old friend. But you left in such a hurry, you forgot to ask Brandon why I really sent him to marry my daughter."

My breath caught in my throat.

"I don't care about your games, Victor," my father spat.

"Oh, it's no game," Victor chuckled darkly. "Tell Evelyn she shouldn't be so upset about losing a fake husband... especially since he just successfully extracted her real, biological twin sister from your secure compound five minutes ago."

The phone clicked dead.

I sat frozen in the back seat, staring at the phone, as the true war for my bloodline officially began.
