Chapter 4 - The Hidden Trigger

Brandon grew impatient. He grabbed my hair, forcing my face toward the documents.
"Sign the damn papers, Evelyn!" he barked.
As he roughly pulled my arm forward to force the pen into my hand, the fabric of my silk evening gown tore. The torn sleeve slipped down my forearm, revealing a thick, heavy silver bracelet that looked like a vintage piece of jewelry.
Brandon didn't give it a second glance. It was just a fashion accessory to him.
But my fingers trembled as I curled my hand inward, feeling the tiny, hidden groove beneath the silver plating.
I pressed the secret button twice.
Click. Click.
It made no sound, but I felt the microscopic vibration against my wrist. The distress signal was sent. It was a silent alarm bouncing off a private, untraceable satellite straight to a secure compound in the city.
I looked up at Brandon, my eyes filled with a terrifying calm.
I whispered the only word that mattered.
"Dad..."
For the first time that night, Brandon looked confused. He blinked, looking around the room, then looked back down at me.
