Chapter 8 - The Father Enters

|

Dr. Shah continued her thorough assessment.

“We also urgently need to perform some diagnostic imaging to check for internal bleeding or broken bones,” she stated firmly.

“I thought X-rays and scans hurt the baby,” I questioned, my maternal instincts fighting through the pain.

“We balance the risk very carefully,” Dr. Shah assured me. She calmly explained that necessary, targeted diagnostic imaging could be performed safely with appropriate shielding, and that missing serious maternal internal injuries could ultimately be far more dangerous to the baby than the scans themselves.

Again, she offered facts. Not panic, not manipulation.

I nodded weakly. “Do whatever you need to do.”

Then, I looked toward the closed door. “My father?”

“He’s waiting right outside in the hallway,” the nurse confirmed.

“Can he come in now?”

“Yes, of course.”

That was precisely how Samuel Bennett finally entered my hospital room. Not by aggressively declaring himself or bursting through the doors like he owned the place. He entered because I specifically asked for him.

He walked in slowly, and he looked remarkably older. That was the very first thing I noticed. The lines around his eyes were deeper, his shoulders slightly stooped.

I had not seen my father in person in almost two full years.

Victor had always found a million reasons why we shouldn't visit. Dad constantly criticizes our marriage. Dad makes my parents incredibly uncomfortable. Dad doesn’t respect our boundaries. Dad is just trying to control you, Emily.

Eventually, the relentless arguments had simply exhausted me. I stopped going to family dinners and holidays because manufacturing excuses for my absence was significantly easier than surviving Victor’s brutal, days-long punishments afterward.

Samuel stood near the foot of my hospital bed, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He did not rush forward or try to hug me.

“Hi,” he said softly.

I laughed once, a short, hollow sound. It hurt my bruised ribs immensely.

“Hi?” I echoed, my voice raspy.

His stoic face completely collapsed, the mask of the hardened investigator shattering.

“I don’t know what to say, Em,” he confessed, his voice breaking.

“Neither do I.”

We sat in the heavy silence for a long moment, the only sound the steady beeping of the fetal monitor.

Then, he finally spoke the words that had clearly been haunting him since he received my message.

“I’m so sorry.”

I looked at him, genuinely confused. “For what? You didn't do this.”

His jaw tightened, a muscle feathering under his skin. “I'm sorry for believing that distance was actually what you wanted.”

My throat closed tight. “I told you to stop calling me.”

“Yes, you did.”

“I sent you that email.”

“Yes.”

I vividly remembered typing that email. Dad, Victor and I really need some space. Please respect our marriage and stop interfering in our lives.

Victor had literally stood directly behind my chair while I typed the words, his hand resting heavily on my shoulder, correcting two specific sentences to make them sound harsher.

Samuel had responded with a single, heartbreaking message:

I don’t agree with this decision, Emily, but I will respect your request. If you ever need me, send anything. One word. One period. I will come immediately.

May you like

That promise was exactly why I had meticulously memorized his number. That was exactly why I had managed to type those two desperate words.

Help. Please.
