Chapter 22 - The Shadow Investor

The public tide turned with the speed of a tsunami overnight. The hashtag #IBelieveEmily trended globally, while sponsors and board members fled Vance Capital in droves.

By mid-afternoon, Detective Singh called Samuel and me into the precinct for an urgent briefing.

“We executed a secondary warrant on Victor’s ghost company, Vanguard Apex,” Singh said, sticking a series of complex organizational charts onto her whiteboard. “And we hit something much bigger than domestic abuse or financial fraud.”

Samuel adjusted his glasses. “What did you find, Detective?”

“Vanguard Apex wasn't funded by Victor’s corporate earnings,” Singh revealed, tapping a photo at the top of the chart. “The seed capital—ten million dollars—was wired from an offshore account belonging to a man named Julian Sterling.”

I frowned. “Sterling? Is he related to Victor’s defense attorney, Richard Sterling?”

“Julian Sterling is Richard Sterling’s older brother,” Singh explained grimly. “He’s a hedge fund titan who operates out of London and New York. Julian uses sociopaths like Victor to target wealthy families, destroy their reputation, and buy up their distressed assets for pennies on the dollar.”

My father gasped. “They weren't just targetting Emily. They were using Victor to destabilize Hayes Global so Julian Sterling could execute a predatory hostile takeover!”

“Precisely,” Singh nodded. “Victor wasn't the mastermind, Emily. He was just the local hammer Julian Sterling used to break your family.”

I stared at the whiteboard, tracing the lines connecting Victor, Helena, Richard, and Julian Sterling. The scope of the conspiracy was breathtaking, but for the first time, the terrifying monster named Victor Vance looked small. He was just a weapon being wielded by much bigger sharks.

“Does Victor know you’ve traced it to Julian?” I asked.

“Not yet,” Singh smiled dangerously. “And we intend to keep it that way until the grand jury convenes.”
