Chapter 15 - The Golden Boy Falls

The arraignment courthouse was packed with local press and curious onlookers two days later. News had leaked that the city’s rising tech mogul and socialite, Victor Vance, had been dragged from his multi-million-dollar mansion in handcuffs.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a simple gray wool coat, flanked by Samuel and my father. For the first time in three years, I wasn't wearing the clothes Victor picked for me. I wasn't wearing the pale pink dresses he claimed made me look 'submissive and soft.'
When Victor was led into the courtroom in an orange jumpsuit, hands chained to his waist, a quiet murmur swept through the room. His slicked-back hair was messy, and the arrogance that usually defined his posture was replaced by a dark, simmering rage.
His high-priced defense attorney, Richard Sterling, stood up immediately. “Your Honor, my client is a pillar of the community. He has no prior criminal record. The allegations brought forth by his wife are the tragic result of a documented mental health crisis.”
Samuel stood up smoothly from our side of the aisle, handing a tablet to the bailiff. “Your Honor, the prosecution has recovered thirty-two unedited video files from the defendant’s personal drive. In these recordings, Mr. Vance explicitly details his plan to deliberately trigger severe emotional trauma in his wife to secure control of her trust fund.”
The judge put on his reading glasses, reviewing the digital file summary provided by Detective Singh. As he read, his expression hardened from neutral detachment to visible disgust.
Victor leaned toward his lawyer, whispering frantically, his fingers digging into the defense table.

“Bail is set at five million dollars,” the judge announced, slamming his gavel down. “The defendant will surrender all passports, wear an ankle monitor upon release, and a strict full protection order is issued for Emily Vance. If you go within five hundred feet of her, Mr. Vance, you will spend the remainder of this process in a maximum-security cell.”
Victor turned his head as he was led away. His dark eyes locked onto mine across the courtroom. He didn't look defeated; he looked like a predator that had just been wounded and was calculating how to tear the cage apart.
