Chapter 25 - The Sabotage

I slammed the door locks shut just as Victor reached my window.
He slapped both palms against the glass, his face twisted into a grotesque, terrifying grin that sent a chill straight down my spine.
“Open the door, Emily!” he shouted, his voice muffled by the heavy glass. “Let’s have a rational conversation like civilized adults!”
I put the car in reverse, slammed my foot onto the accelerator, and backed out of the parking spot at full speed. My rear bumper clipped a concrete barrier, sending a loud crunching sound through the chassis, but I didn't stop.
Victor lunged out of the way, cursing loudly, and sprinted back toward his SUV.
I threw the shifter into drive and sped out onto the main road, my heart hammering like a trapped bird inside my chest. “He’s behind me, Singh!” I screamed into the speakerphone. “He’s chasing me down Route 9!”
“Units are en route!” Singh reported urgently. “Stay on the main road! Do not pull over!”
Through my rearview mirror, I saw Victor’s heavy SUV accelerating fast, creeping closer to my rear bumper. He didn't care about the police. He didn't care about his bail. He was in the grip of a psychotic break, driven by the complete loss of control over his prized possession—me.
He slammed his front bumper into my rear frame. The impact jerked my neck forward violently, sending my car swerving toward the shoulder.
“You think you can leave me?” Victor’s voice suddenly blared through my car’s Bluetooth speakers. He was dialing my cell phone repeatedly. “You’re nothing without me, Emily! You’re a weak, helpless little girl!”
I gripped the steering wheel with white knuckles, stabilizing the car, and looked ahead. Two police cruisers with flashing red and blue lights were speeding up the highway from the opposite direction.

“I’m not helpless anymore, Victor,” I said softly into the phone, slamming my brakes hard as the police cars executed a tactical box maneuver around us.
Victor’s SUV swerved frantically to avoid T-boning my sedan, flipped onto two wheels, and crashed hard into the roadside ditch, plowing through the wooden guardrail.
