Chapter 20 - The Smear Campaign

The reaction from Victor’s camp was swift, ruthless, and terrifyingly modern.
The next morning, I woke up to my phone buzzing incessantly with notifications. A viral video was trending across every major social media platform under the hashtag #EmilyVanceExposed.
I clicked on the video with shaking fingers.
It was a meticulously edited three-minute montage of me at my absolute lowest points over the past two years. The clip showed me screaming hysterically in the Oakridge kitchen, throwing a glass vase against the wall, and sobbing uncontrollably on the floor while pulling at my hair.
The video had been strategically trimmed to remove all context—it completely cut out Victor standing just off-camera, whispering cruel taunts about my deceased mother, or Helena pouring detergent over my clothes.
To the untrained eyes of the public, I looked completely insane. Unhinged. Dangerous.
The top comments were brutal:
“Wow, no wonder he recorded her! She’s crazy!”
“Poor guy was just trying to document his abusive wife.”
“She belongs in an asylum, not a courtroom.”
My father walked into the kitchen, his face pale as he looked at his own phone. “They leaked it to a tabloid network an hour ago. Victor’s public relations firm is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars boosting the post.”
Samuel arrived ten minutes later, looking grim. “Victor’s attorney just filed an emergency motion with the judge to dismiss our domestic violence charges, using the leaked video as evidence of Emily’s 'extreme instability.'”

I sat at the island counter, staring at the viral video playing on loop. My hands were shaking, but inside my chest, something fundamental shifted. The shame I used to feel when Victor played those clips back to me was gone.
“They want a public circus?” I said, looking up at Samuel and my father with ice in my voice. “Fine. Let’s give them the full show.”
