Three months later, the federal courthouse was packed to maximum capacity for the opening statements of The State v. Victor Vance and Helena Vance.
The courtroom was silent as the prosecution team displayed a massive timeline across three high-definition monitors facing the jury box.
Nora took the stand first, her voice clear and unwavering as she detailed every instance of recorded abuse, financial theft, and family intimidation she had witnessed over four years. Helena sat at the defense table in handcuffs, refusing to make eye contact with her daughter.
Then Clara Montgomery testified, detailing the systemic pattern of gaslighting that had destroyed her architecture career years before I ever met Victor.
Finally, I took the witness stand.
I sat in the wooden chair, looking out at the twelve jurors who held my former tormentors' fates in their hands.
“Ms. Hayes,” the prosecutor asked gently. “When you were living at Oakridge, why didn't you just pack your bags and leave?”
I looked at the jury, feeling no shame, no fear, and no hesitation.
“Because when someone systematically destroys your belief in your own sanity every single day,” I explained softly, “the world outside that house feels far more terrifying than the monster inside it. Victor Vance didn't just lock doors—he locked my mind.”

Victor stood up abruptly from the defense table, knocking his chair over backward with a violent crash. “She’s lying! She’s a crazy, unhinged lunatic!” he screamed, his face turning purple as three bailiffs immediately wrestled him to the floor.
The jury watched in utter shock as Victor’s carefully constructed mask shattered completely in open court, exposing the unhinged monster beneath.
