Chapter 8 - The Shadow at the Gate

|
For three glorious months, our home felt like a sanctuary. Grace was thriving, gaining weight, and filling our quiet hallways with soft coos. But peace, I soon learned, is a fragile thing when you come from a family that measures love in leverage.
It started on a chilly Tuesday evening. Mark was setting the dinner table while I rocked Grace to sleep in the nursery. Through the lace curtains, I noticed a dark sedan idling across the street with its lights killed.
"Mark," I called softly, keeping my voice low so as not to startle the baby. "Has that car been sitting out there all afternoon?"
Mark stepped to the window, pulling the blind back an inch. His jaw tightened instantly.
"I'll go check it out," he muttered, grabbing his coat.
"No, don't," I pulled his arm. "We have security cameras now. Remember?"
Ten minutes later, Mark brought up the digital feed on his tablet. The sedan sat motionless for an hour before driving off. The license plate was unregistered to any public driver.
The next morning, the mail arrived. Among the utility bills and baby clothing catalogs was a crisp, white envelope bearing the gold-embossed logo of Vanguard & Sterling Legal Group—the most ruthless family law firm in the state.
I opened it with trembling fingers.
"What is it, Sarah?" Mark asked, setting down his coffee mug.
"It's a formal notice of intent," I whispered, my voice shaking as I read the bold print at the top of the page. "My mother is filing for emergency grandparent visitation rights."
Mark slammed his hand on the counter. "Grandparent rights?! After what they did to you? After what Richard did?"
"The petition claims I am mentally unstable due to postpartum trauma," I read, feeling a cold knot form in my stomach. "It says I am deliberately alienating Grace from her loving family."

"She’s out of her mind," Mark swore under his breath. "The ink isn't even dry on your father's plea deal!"
"Evelyn doesn't care about the plea deal," I said, looking out toward the driveway where the dark sedan had been standing hours earlier. "She wants Grace. And she’s going to use every dirty trick in the book to get to her."
