I heard her before I saw her.
“I am her mother! You cannot keep me away from my own daughter.”
A security officer appeared in my doorway.
“Ms.
Sarah, a woman named Evelyn says she’s your mother.
Do you want her admitted?”
My whole childhood seemed to sit inside that question.
Do you want her admitted?
Nobody had ever asked me whether I wanted access granted to my mother.
Access had always been treated as her right.
I looked at Mark.
Then at the photograph of Grace beside my bed.
“No.”
The officer nodded and closed the door.
My mother screamed my name from the hallway.
“Sarah! You are destroying this family!”
I felt an old reflex rise inside me: explain, soothe, apologize, repair.
Then I remembered lying on granite while she told me to stop faking.
I did nothing.
Eventually security escorted her away.
Later that afternoon, Grandpa came alone.
He looked twenty years older than he had at his birthday party.
He stood beside my bed without touching me.
“May I sit?”
The question nearly broke me.
“Yes.”
He lowered himself into the chair.
For a while neither of us spoke.
Then he said, “I should have stopped this family from becoming what it became.”
I shook my head.
“Dad pushed me.
Mom defended him.
That’s on them.”
“And all of us who kept calling their behavior family business helped teach them there would never be consequences.”
He placed a flash drive on the table beside my bed.
“This is a copy of the footage.
The police have the original.
Your lawyer can have this copy.”
I stared at it.
A tiny black rectangle.
Five centimeters of plastic containing the moment my parents’ version of reality finally lost to evidence.
“Chloe?” I asked.
Grandpa’s mouth tightened.
“She changed her statement.”

Apparently, after learning about the cameras, Chloe admitted she had seen Dad grab me.
