Chapter 13 - A Breach of Trust

I spent the entire night sitting at our kitchen island, staring at the photocopied therapy notes David had managed to secure from the hearing transcript.
Every word felt like a knife in my chest. Patient expresses deep inadequacy... Patient struggles with feelings of betrayal by parental figures... They had taken my rawest moments of grief and spun them into a narrative of madness.
Mark walked into the kitchen, carrying two mugs of hot chamomile tea. He set one down beside me and wrapped his arms around my shoulders.
"How did she get them, Mark?" I whispered, tears brimming in my eyes. "Those files were locked in a vault at a private clinic in Brooklyn. Not even my insurance company had access to those detailed session transcripts."
Mark’s face grew stern. "Then someone at that clinic was paid off."
"It doesn't matter," I wiped a tear from my cheek. "Judge Thomas gave us seventy-two hours to refute the records before he issues a temporary order suspending my trustee powers."
"It does matter," Mark insisted, his voice hardening. "Because if we prove those records were stolen or bribed, Evelyn’s lawyer didn't just break civil rules—he committed a federal crime."
Mark pulled out his phone and dialed a number. "Hey, Tommy? It's Mark. I need you to run a background check on a medical records clerk at Bellevue Wellness. Start with anyone who suddenly bought a new car last month."
Tommy was Mark’s college roommate, now a senior cybersecurity investigator for a private firm in Manhattan.
By three o'clock the next morning, Mark’s laptop chimed. A file transfer appeared on the screen.
"Look at this, Sarah," Mark called out, pointing to a series of bank statements.
A senior billing clerk at Bellevue Wellness named Brenda Ruiz had received three separate wire transfers totaling $15,000 from a shell corporation called Apex Logistics.

A quick corporate search revealed the sole registered officer of Apex Logistics: Attorney Vance’s junior associate.
"We got them," Mark smiled grimly. "They didn't just breach privacy. They bribed a hospital worker to steal your medical history."
