Chapter 21 - The Confrontation on the Lawn

I opened the encrypted email while Mark went to make fresh coffee.
The message contained no text—only a PDF attachment labeled Project_Aegis_Summary.pdf.
I downloaded the file. As the pages loaded, my eyes widened in complete disbelief.
The document was an internal forensic report compiled by an independent international audit firm twelve years ago. It detailed a massive, secret financial network operating beneath the umbrella of Sterling Enterprises—a network that involved illegal land acquisitions, political payoffs, and offshore shell accounts across four continents.
But what made my heart stop was the signature at the bottom of the audit charter: Arthur Sterling & Richard Sterling.
My father and my grandfather hadn't been enemies fighting over the family trust. They had been business partners in a massive, secret syndicate for decades. The bitter feud between them had only erupted three years ago when my father tried to steal the syndicate's master accounts for himself.
I stood up, holding the phone, my breath catching in my throat.
Just then, my assistant called.
"Chairwoman Sterling," her voice sounded panicked over the line. "Your grandfather... he just woke up in the ICU. He’s asking to see you immediately. He says it’s a matter of life and death."
Half an hour later, I stepped back into the quiet cardiac ward at St. Jude's Hospital.
Grandpa was sitting up in bed, looking pale but remarkably alert. The monitors surrounding him hummed softly in the dim room.
"You found the file, didn't you, Sarah?" Grandpa rasped quietly before I could even speak.
I walked to the foot of his bed, holding my tablet. "You lied to me, Grandpa. You painted Dad as the villain and yourself as the noble protector. But you built this dirty empire together, didn't you?"
Grandpa closed his eyes, taking a deep, ragged breath. "We built what was necessary to survive in a dirty world, Sarah. But Richard grew greedy. He wanted total control. He was the one who ordered the hit on your father's business rivals... and he was the one who brought them into our lives."

"Who is them?" I asked, a cold knot forming in my stomach.
"The Sovereign Syndicate," Grandpa whispered, opening his eyes filled with genuine terror. "The people Richard borrowed fifty million dollars from to finance his illegal expansion."
