Chapter 11 - The Secret Clause

By midnight, the signatures were notarized inside the ICU. I was officially the Managing Trustee of the Sterling Family Trust, holding controlling authority over twenty-four corporate entities, real estate holdings, and institutional investments.
I barely had time to process the weight of my new title before the first battle began.
At eight o'clock the following morning, David Miller and I walked into the executive conference room at Sterling Tower for an emergency board meeting called by my mother’s legal team.
Evelyn was already seated at the head of the long mahogany table, flanked by four senior corporate attorneys and two board members who had long been loyal to my father. She wore an expensive cream-colored suit, sipping tea as if she owned the world.
When I walked in, her eyes narrowed in contempt.
"Sarah," Evelyn said, setting her teacup down with a sharp click. "This is a closed board meeting for trust officers. Run along back to your baby."
"Actually, Evelyn," David Miller announced, stepping forward and placing a stack of certified legal filings onto the table, "Sarah is attending in her official capacity as Managing Trustee of the Sterling Family Estate."
Evelyn’s lawyer, a sharp-faced man named Vance, chuckled arrogantly. "Nonsense. Arthur Sterling is incapacitated. Under Section 4 of the bylaws, control reverts to the Vice-Chairman—Richard Sterling."
"Section 4 applies only in the absence of an executed successor designation," David countered smoothly. "Arthur Sterling executed a Form 802 designation last night at 11:14 PM, naming Sarah as primary successor. All voting rights are now vested entirely in her."
The room went dead silent.
Evelyn’s face turned pale, her polished composure cracking for a single second. "That's impossible! The old man is on a ventilator!"
"He was fully coherent, and we have two independent neurologists who signed off on his capacity," I said, stepping up to the head of the table.
I looked my mother straight in the eyes, refusing to flinch.
"As my first official act as Managing Trustee," I said, my voice echoing through the room, "I am revoking Richard Sterling’s corporate expense accounts, terminating his defense fund allowance, and ordering an immediate forensic audit of all family accounts."

Evelyn stood up so fast her chair screeched against the floorboards. "You ungrateful little brat! You wouldn't dare!"
"Try me," I replied coldly.
