Chapter 22 - The Hidden Millions

|

I pulled a chair up to my grandfather's bed, leaning closer. "Start talking, Grandpa. Every single detail."

Grandpa swallowed hard, his throat dry. "Ten years ago, Richard wanted to expand our construction holdings into European markets. He didn't want to wait for organic growth, so he approached a shadow investment consortium known as The Sovereign. They lent him fifty million dollars through offshore accounts."

"And what did they want in return?" I asked.

"Influence," Grandpa answered bitterly. "They used our corporate entities to launder funds from international smuggling and political bribery. When I discovered what Richard had done, I tried to shut it down. That’s why Richard hated me. That’s why he tried to take control of the trust."

"And my fall on the stairs?" I asked, my voice trembling as the terrible truth began to assemble itself in my mind. "Was that really just about a seat at a birthday party?"

Grandpa looked away, tears brimming in his aged eyes.

"Richard was desperate, Sarah," Grandpa confessed softly. "The Sovereign gave him a deadline to pay back ninety million dollars—the principal plus extortionate interest. The night of my birthday, Richard knew I was about to sign the trust over to you. If you got the trust, he couldn't access the reserves to pay off his debt."

"So he tried to kill me..." I whispered, horror washing over me like an icy wave. "He tried to eliminate me and my baby so he could claim the estate as sole heir."

"Yes," Grandpa choked out. "He panicked. He thought if you were gone, I would have no choice but to leave everything to him."

I sat back in my chair, feeling sick to my stomach.

It hadn't just been family dysfunction or toxic favoritisim. I had been a target in an international mob war orchestrated by my own father to cover his secret debts.

"Where is the money now, Grandpa?" I demanded, my tone hardening like steel. "The fifty million he borrowed?"

"Hidden," Grandpa whispered. "In an encrypted account tied to Grace’s trust fund. Richard hid it there so neither I nor The Sovereign could touch it without his master key."
