The surgeon’s voice remained controlled as she worked to stop my bleeding.
I stared at the ceiling and thought about the ultrasound photograph in my wallet.
Five years.
Five years of injections, failed transfers, medical bills, hope, grief, and starting over.
I had imagined meeting my daughter a thousand times.
None of those imaginings involved my father’s hand on my dress.
Then a sound came from across the room.
Small.
Angry.
Alive.
My baby’s cry.
I began sobbing before I even realized what I was hearing.
“That’s her,” a nurse said.
“That’s your little girl.”
Mark appeared beside my head in scrubs, tears running openly down his face.
“She’s breathing.”
“Can I see her?”
A neonatal nurse brought her close for only a few seconds.
She was tiny, wrapped beneath tubes and blankets, her face red with fury at the world.
I touched one finger to her cheek.
“Hi, Grace,” I whispered.
We had chosen the name months earlier.
Grace.
Something freely given.
Something my family had always demanded but rarely offered.
The neonatal team took her to the NICU because she was premature and had experienced significant distress.
Mark went with her after the surgeon assured him my bleeding was finally under control.
I woke hours later in recovery with an IV in each arm, pain radiating through my body, and an empty space where my daughter should have been.
My first word was her name.
A nurse leaned closer.
“Grace is stable in the NICU.
Your husband is with her.”
I closed my eyes.
Stable.
It became the most beautiful word I had ever heard.
Then I remembered the officer.
The video.
My father.
“My family?”
The nurse hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“Your husband asked that no one except him and your grandfather be allowed into this unit.
May you like
Security has been notified.”
“Good.”
