Chapter 9 - The Junior Employee

|

"Dad called me exactly six months ago," I continued, the memory of that heartbreaking phone call still fresh in my mind. "He had received a confusing tax notice for a massive offshore account he absolutely did not recognize. He was confused, frightened, and his memory was starting to slip due to the aggressive chemotherapy. He asked me to simply review his financial records to make sure everything was in order."

I looked at Uncle Raymond, who was now staring at Marcus with a mixture of profound shock and deep disgust.

"When I started digging, I found a massive, bleeding financial wound," I said. "Marcus, you had aggressively used an old, outdated Power of Attorney document—one that Dad had legally revoked three years ago—to gain access to his primary banking portal."

Mr. Sterling, the second bank investigator, nodded solemnly in agreement. "Our internal audit confirmed this timeline, Ms. Ward. Your brother initiated a sophisticated social engineering scheme against our institution."

"You maliciously changed his secure passwords," I accused Marcus directly. "You redirected his physical mail and his monthly paper statements to a P.O. Box you controlled so he would never see the missing funds. And when the bank flagged the unusually large transfers, you aggressively persuaded a terrified junior bank employee to approve the wires by falsely claiming Dad was too violently ill to appear in person or speak on the phone."

"That junior employee has already been terminated and is currently cooperating fully with federal authorities in exchange for immunity," Samuel Price added smoothly, driving the final nail into the coffin of Marcus's defense.

Marcus swallowed hard, sweat beginning to bead on his forehead. "I... I was protecting his assets! The stock market was volatile! I was moving the funds into safe havens to protect the family wealth!"

"You were funding a lifestyle you couldn't afford," I shot back, my voice laced with venom. "You stole from a dying man to pay for luxury cars and tailored suits. You stripped his retirement accounts bare while I was busy trying to figure out how to pay his weekly hospice nurses."

The relatives in the room were completely silent now. The golden boy illusion had completely shattered, leaving behind nothing but a pathetic, desperate thief. Even Aunt Celia, who had always fiercely defended Marcus’s worst behavior, physically took a step away from him, looking at him as if he were a complete stranger.
