Chapter 7 - The Handwritten Note

|

Samuel Price walked methodically across the room, projecting an aura of absolute control. He gently took the six manila folders from the open safe and placed them squarely in the center of my father’s massive desk. He looked around the room, his sharp eyes lingering on Marcus.

"I must ask that everyone remain exactly where they are," Samuel instructed, his tone polite but leaving absolutely no room for negotiation.

Marcus immediately reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out his smartphone. His thumb hovered frantically over the screen.

"You may certainly call anyone you wish, Marcus," Samuel said smoothly, adjusting his glasses. "But I feel obligated to warn you that permanently deleting any financial records from your devices right now would constitute the destruction of evidence in an active federal investigation, which would create a significantly larger problem for you."

Marcus froze, his thumb hovering over the glass screen. Slowly, his hand dropped back to his side, the phone clutched in a white-knuckle grip.

"Elena," Samuel said, turning to me with a respectful nod. "Please, read your father’s final note to the family."

I unfolded the heavy parchment paper. My father’s handwriting was slightly shaky from the illness, but the letters were deliberate and clear. The room was so quiet I could hear the antique grandfather clock ticking in the hallway.

"If Marcus claims that Elena stole from me, read everything," I read aloud, my voice echoing in the tense silence. "She fiercely protected what little remained. Marcus took all the rest."

The room completely erupted.

Aunt Celia gasped loudly, covering her mouth with both hands. Uncle Raymond looked violently back and forth between me and Marcus, his rigid worldview completely shattering in real time.

"That is a lie!" Marcus shouted over the noise, pointing a trembling finger at the note in my hands. "She wrote that! She forged his handwriting! Dad was on heavy painkillers for the last two months, he could barely even hold a pen, let alone write a coherent legal document!"

One of the bank investigators, Mr. Vance, calmly stepped forward and raised a digital tablet.

"The signature on that specific document was witnessed by two independent notaries, filmed in high definition, and medically certified by an independent psychiatric evaluator," Vance stated flatly, tapping the screen. "Your father was completely lucid when he drafted that statement, Mr. Ward."

Marcus opened his mouth to argue, but no words came out. He was completely trapped, and the walls were rapidly closing in.
