Chapter 14 - The Desperate Lunge

|
The sheer panic in Marcus’s eyes was absolute. His entire world, his fake wealth, his stolen luxury, his arrogant superiority—it was all disintegrating into dust in a matter of minutes.
On the screen, my father’s voice softened, losing the hard edge of anger and returning to the gentle, loving tone I remembered so fondly from my childhood.
"Elena," Dad said on the video, smiling warmly at the camera. "My sweet, quiet, brilliant girl. You never once asked me for a single dime of my money. You only asked me to let the truth finally come out lawfully, without protecting him anymore."
Marcus let out a guttural, enraged scream.
"Turn it off!" Marcus roared, completely losing his mind.
He lunged violently across the mahogany desk, his arms outstretched, desperately trying to grab the computer monitor and smash it to the floor to stop the recording.
He never even made it halfway.
The two bank investigators, Mr. Vance and Mr. Sterling, moved with terrifying, practiced speed. They intercepted Marcus mid-lunge, grabbing him by the shoulders and slamming him aggressively face-down onto the polished surface of the desk. Papers scattered everywhere.
"Get your hands off me!" Marcus thrashed wildly, knocking over a brass lamp, but the two investigators pinned his arms expertly behind his back, holding him completely immobile.
"Remain calm, Mr. Ward, or we will be forced to restrain you further," Mr. Vance warned, his voice devoid of any emotion.
Uncle Raymond took a shocked step forward, raising his hands. "Hey! You can't just attack him! He’s grieving!"
"He is actively attempting to destroy evidence in a federal fraud investigation, Raymond," Samuel Price snapped, his voice cracking like a whip across the room. "If you interfere, you will be named as a co-conspirator. I strongly suggest you sit down and remain completely silent."
Raymond immediately froze, his courage evaporating instantly at the threat of legal implication. He slowly backed away, leaving Marcus pinned to the desk, panting heavily, helplessly forced to listen to the rest of the video.

Dad continued speaking from the computer screen, completely unbothered by the chaos unfolding in the real world.
"I am officially leaving this house, the estate, and all of its contents entirely to Elena," Dad announced, his voice filled with profound gratitude. "Because she is the one who stayed. She is the one who made this massive house feel like a true home during the darkest, most painful days of my illness."
