Chapter 16 - The Arrest

The heavy study doors burst open. Two uniformed police officers and two plainclothes detectives strode confidently into the room, their hands resting cautiously on their utility belts. The flashing red and blue lights from their cruisers illuminated the large windows of the study, casting an eerie, rhythmic glow across the terrified faces of my relatives.
"We received a call regarding an assault and a federal fraud complaint," the lead detective said, his sharp eyes instantly assessing the chaotic scene. He looked at Marcus, who was still pinned firmly to the mahogany desk by the two bank investigators.
"That is the suspect, Detective," Samuel Price said smoothly, stepping forward to hand the officer a thick, sealed envelope containing a summary of the forensic evidence. "Marcus Ward. He is wanted for questioning regarding massive elder financial exploitation, identity theft, and severe wire fraud."
"He also violently assaulted me in front of fifty witnesses at the church an hour ago," I added calmly, pointing to my swollen, bloody lip and the ruined collar of my black dress.
The detective didn't need to hear anything else. He nodded to the uniformed officers.
"Marcus Ward, you are under arrest," the officer stated firmly, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
The bank investigators stepped back, allowing the police to pull Marcus roughly to his feet. They twisted his arms behind his back and ratcheted the cold steel cuffs tightly around his wrists. The loud, metallic click of the locking mechanism echoed with brutal finality.
"You have the right to remain silent," the officer began reciting the Miranda warning as they patted him down for weapons. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."
Marcus was hyperventilating, his chest heaving as the reality of his complete destruction finally set in. He looked frantically toward the doorway, making desperate eye contact with our relatives.
"Uncle Raymond! Aunt Celia!" Marcus begged, his voice cracking with sheer desperation. "Don't let them do this! Call a lawyer! Tell them it's a mistake! We’re family!"
The silence from the family was deafening.

No one moved an inch to help him. The illusion was completely shattered. They had seen the video. They had heard the audio recordings. They knew exactly what he was.
Uncle Raymond slowly lowered his eyes, staring intently at the pattern on the Persian rug, refusing to meet Marcus's desperate gaze. Aunt Celia quietly reached into her purse and handed me a clean, soft tissue for my bleeding lip, completely turning her back on her favorite nephew.
