Chapter 15 - The New Beneficiary

"As for the remainder of my liquid fortune," Dad continued on the screen, taking one final, deep breath. "The millions of dollars that Marcus did not manage to steal... I am leaving absolutely none of it to him."
Marcus groaned against the polished wood of the desk, his eyes squeezing shut in absolute agony.
"The entirety of my remaining estate, every single dollar, will be placed into an irrevocable trust," Dad explained clearly. "This trust will strictly fund a new, dedicated legal aid foundation. It will provide free, world-class forensic accountants and ruthless attorneys to elderly people who are being financially exploited, abused, and robbed by their own greedy relatives. The foundation will be fully managed and directed by Elena."
The profound poetry of his final decision hung heavily in the air. My father had taken the horrific abuse he had suffered at the hands of his own son and weaponized his fortune to ensure that other vulnerable people would have the protection he had almost lacked.
"Goodbye, Marcus," Dad said, his image beginning to fade. "I hope, one day, you find a way to become a man worth respecting."
The video ended, cutting to a stark black screen.
The silence in the study was absolute. The sheer weight of my father’s final judgment had completely crushed any remaining delusions Marcus harbored. He wasn't getting the money. He wasn't getting the house. He was getting absolutely nothing but the horrific consequences of his own actions.
From far off in the distance, cutting through the quiet tension of the sprawling estate, a faint sound began to build.
Wail. Wail. Wail.
It was the unmistakable, rising sound of police sirens approaching up the long, winding driveway.
Marcus jerked his head up, his eyes wild with terror. "Sirens? Who called the police? Elena, tell them to stop! You can't do this to me!"
"I didn't call them, Marcus," I said, looking down at him with cold detachment.

"I did," Samuel Price announced, checking his gold pocket watch. "Following your father’s explicit legal instructions. I was ordered to have the authorities waiting on standby. If you remained calm, cooperated, and surrendered the stolen assets, they would not be called. However, if you attempted to flee, attempted to destroy the evidence, or physically attacked your sister... I was to signal them immediately."
Marcus realized with crushing finality that he had managed to commit all three fatal errors within the span of thirty minutes.
