Chapter 10 - The Recorded Whispers

"Let's move on," Samuel Price said, breaking the heavy silence. He reached over and opened Folder Two and Folder Three.
"The second folder contains the comprehensive digital login histories, definitively proving that Marcus's personal laptop and mobile devices were the exact origin points for every fraudulent wire transfer," Samuel explained. "And the third folder holds something significantly more compelling. Recorded audio calls."
Vanessa, who had been trying incredibly hard to blend into the stone fireplace, suddenly let out a sharp, panicked gasp. "Recorded calls?"
"Yes, Vanessa," I said, turning my attention to my sister-in-law. "When I discovered the massive theft, I quietly hired a private security firm to conduct a full audit of Dad's home network and communication lines. We discovered that Marcus had been utilizing a compromised VoIP service to route his calls, which allowed us to legally subpoena the server logs."
I picked up a small digital recorder from the desk and pressed play.
The audio was crisp and undeniable. It was Marcus’s voice, laughing arrogantly.
“The old man doesn't have a clue, Van,” Marcus’s recorded voice boasted over the speaker. “His brain is total mush from the meds. I just moved another fifty grand this morning. We’re going to sell the lake cabin the exact second the funeral is over. We’ll list it through one of my shell LLCs so Elena doesn't see a single dime of the profit.”
Then, Vanessa’s high-pitched, excited voice chimed in.
“Make sure you transfer enough to cover the down payment on the G-Wagon, babe. I can't be seen driving that old Mercedes to the country club anymore.”
I stopped the recording.
Vanessa’s face drained of all color. She looked absolutely terrified. She immediately threw her hands up, stepping away from her husband as if he were suddenly highly radioactive.
"I didn't know!" Vanessa cried out to the room, her voice shaking violently. "I swear to God, I didn't know! Marcus told me all of those transfers were completely legal! He said Dad was giving us an early advance on the inheritance!"
Marcus’s eyes widened with furious, animalistic rage. He lunged sideways and aggressively grabbed Vanessa’s wrist, twisting it hard.
"Shut your damn mouth, Vanessa!" Marcus hissed violently, spittle flying from his lips. "Stop talking right now!"

The two bank investigators immediately stepped forward, their hands hovering near their waistbands, projecting a clear, silent warning. Marcus saw the physical threat, released her wrist instantly, and threw his hands up in mock surrender.
He turned back to face the stunned relatives. "This is a setup! This is just family business! Elena is twisting the paperwork because she has always hated me!"
