Chapter 13 - The Voice from the Grave

The study was so completely silent that the only sound was my father’s voice projecting from the computer speakers. It felt as though a ghost had suddenly manifested in the room to deliver the final verdict.
"I loved you, Marcus," Dad continued on the screen, looking directly into the camera lens with profound, heavy sorrow. "I spent my entire life trying to give you the world, trying to support your dreams, hoping that one day you would finally grow up and take responsibility for your own life. But you didn't. You viewed my love as a weakness to be exploited."
Marcus was trembling visibly now. He looked around the room, desperate to find an ally, but every single relative was completely captivated by the glowing screen.
"I know exactly what you did," Dad said, his voice hardening into steel. "I know about the forged signatures. I know about the shell companies. Elena showed me the meticulously documented proof of your theft six months ago. I begged you to stop. I left you messages. I gave you every opportunity to confess and return the money, and I would have forgiven you. But you just kept stealing."
Dad took a slow, labored breath on the video, adjusting his position in the leather chair.
"You thought I was just a blind, dying old man," Dad said, a bitter, sad smile touching his lips. "But I saw you, Marcus. I saw exactly who you truly are."
My father paused, leaning closer to the camera. The sadness in his eyes was instantly replaced by a fierce, protective fire.
"If you try to retaliate," Dad warned, his voice dropping into a deadly, serious register. "If you try to harm your sister, or drag her name through the mud, or lay one finger on her... I want you to clearly understand that she holds damning evidence far beyond what is sitting in that safe. She has the power to destroy your entire life, and she has my absolute, unconditional blessing to use it."
Marcus’s head snapped toward me. He looked at the drying, crusted blood on my split lip. He looked at the torn collar of my black dress where he had violently grabbed me in the church.

The horrifying realization finally washed over his face.
He hadn't just punched his sister in a fit of grief. He had committed a violent, documented assault in front of a hundred witnesses, playing perfectly into the trap that had already been meticulously set for him. He had handed us the final, irrefutable proof of his dangerous, unstable character.
