Chapter 5 - The Brass Key

|

The room fell dead silent after Marcus's outburst. The sheer entitlement echoing off the wood-paneled walls made several of the older relatives shift uncomfortably, but no one dared to speak up and correct him. They were all waiting to see the legendary fortune locked inside the wall.

I turned my back on my brother and knelt gracefully on the Persian rug before the heavy, antique steel safe. The metal felt cold beneath my fingertips. I reached beneath the collar of my ruined, blood-stained black dress and retrieved a heavy brass key hanging on a long, sturdy silver chain.

I had worn the key every single day for the last six months. It had rested against my skin, a constant, heavy reminder of the promise I had made to my father in that sterile hospital room.

As I lifted the key, Marcus leaned in so closely that his shadow completely covered me. I could hear his rapid, greedy breathing.

"Stop trying to drag this out for attention, Elena," Marcus sneered, his voice dripping with venom. "Just turn the damn key."

I inserted the brass key into the intricate lock. The mechanism was old and required a specific, deliberate amount of pressure. I turned it slowly. A heavy, satisfying mechanical click echoed loudly in the quiet study.

I grasped the cold brass handle and pulled the heavy steel door open.

Marcus immediately shoved my shoulder aside, pushing past me to get the first look at his supposed treasure. He dropped to his knees, his eyes wide with manic anticipation.

But there were no towering stacks of hundred-dollar bills. There were no velvet boxes filled with heirloom jewelry. There were no bearer bonds.

The massive safe was almost completely empty.

Sitting in the center of the bottom shelf were only six neatly labeled manila folders, a single, encrypted silver flash drive, and a folded piece of heavy parchment paper bearing my father’s unmistakable, elegant signature on the outside.

Marcus froze. He blinked rapidly, his brain completely short-circuiting as it tried to process the stark, empty reality before him.

"Where is it?" Marcus whispered, his hands frantically feeling the sides of the safe, as if the millions of dollars were somehow hidden behind a secret panel. "Where is the cash? Where are the deeds?"

I stood up, smoothing the front of my dress, completely ignoring his frantic panic. I reached down and calmly lifted the folded note and the flash drive from the safe.

"Before anyone touches these confidential documents," I announced, raising my voice to address the entire room, "my father specifically asked that his personal attorney be present for the reading."
