Chapter 9 - The Children's Guardian

|
The tension in the estate was palpable, even to those who didn't know the specifics of the looming mafia war. Guards patrolled the hallways with increased frequency, their weapons visible. But Elvira worked tirelessly to ensure Leo and Mia felt none of the fear.
It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. The children were restless, trapped indoors. Elvira had built a massive blanket fort in the center of the grand living room, using expensive silk cushions and heavy wool throws draped over the antique furniture.
She was inside the fort, using a flashlight to make shadow puppets on the fabric wall, eliciting genuine, ringing laughter from Mia. Leo was completely engrossed, trying to make a shadow wolf with his small hands.
Lorenzo stood in the doorway, completely captivated by the scene.
He leaned against the heavy oak doorframe, his arms crossed over his chest. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the intricate, dark tattoos wrapping around his forearms. He watched Elvira’s profile illuminated by the flashlight, the soft curve of her smile, the way her dark hair fell messily over her shoulders.
He had spent his life surrounded by women who wanted his money, his power, or his name. Isabella had been the epitome of that greed. But Elvira wanted nothing from him. She was purely, fiercely devoted to the children.
“Is that a dragon, or a very lumpy dog?” Lorenzo’s deep voice rumbled through the room, breaking the silence.
Elvira jumped slightly, dropping the flashlight. She peeked her head out from under the blanket fort, her cheeks flushing pink.
“It’s a dragon, obviously,” she defended, trying to smooth her hair. “You just lack imagination, Mr. Moretti.”
“Lorenzo,” he corrected smoothly, walking toward the fort. “I told you to call me Lorenzo.”
He didn't stop at the edge of the blankets. To Elvira’s absolute shock, the terrifying mafia boss dropped to his knees and crawled inside the cramped, dimly lit space, sitting cross-legged next to her. The fort suddenly felt incredibly small. His broad shoulders brushed against hers, radiating a heat that made her heart race.
“Uncle Enzo!” Leo cheered, throwing his arms around Lorenzo’s neck.
Lorenzo caught the boy easily, hugging him tight. He looked over Leo’s shoulder directly into Elvira’s eyes. The proximity was intoxicating.
“You’ve done a remarkable job with them, Elvira,” Lorenzo whispered, his dark eyes softening in a way that made her breath catch. “I don't know how I can ever thank you.”
May you like
Elvira swallowed hard, unable to look away from his intense gaze. “You already have. My mother is getting better.”
Lorenzo reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “That’s not a reward. That’s a promise.”
